Omanyala Issues Warning to Olympic Champion Marcell Jacobs Ahead of Kip Keino Classic

Kenya’s sprint hero Ferdinand Omanyala has issued a warning to his competitors ahead of the Kip Keino Classic, slated for May 7 at the Kasarani Stadium.

Omanyala who currently carries the title of the fastest man in Africa has warned Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs (Italy) and Olympic 200m silver medalist Fred Kerley (USA) to think of anything else apart from victory when they face off.

“I wholeheartedly welcome Jacobs to come and watch our beautiful Big Five at Nairobi National Park but not beat me at home. I won’t allow that!” Omanyala told Nation Sport.

This will be the second meeting between Omanyala and Jacobs after the duo faced off 60m race in February at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in France with the Kenyan settling for fourth in 6.57 seconds as Jacobs carried the day after clocking 6.50 seconds.

Omanyala has reflected on their first meeting on February 17 adding that this time it will be a different affair.

“This will be a big one and a cracker. I welcome the Olympic champion to Kenya and Kerley. I didn’t have goose bumps but the entry of Jacobs has elicited some,” he said.

Last year’s edition was held behind closed doors after fans were locked out as a COVID-19 mitigation measure.

This year’s edition will be different though, with an electric atmosphere expected at Kasarani as fans will be allowed entry in large numbers.

Expectations are high for Omanyala and other Kenyan athletes to put forward their best foot as they will be buoyed by the home support at the annual global event.
