Michael Olunga’s Brace Sends Al Duhail into the Knock-out of the AFC Champions League

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was a man on fire on Tuesday night scoring two goals as his Qatari club of Al Duhail booked a slot in the knockout phase of the AFC Champions League.

In what was the sixth and final game of the group stage, Olunga scored the brace in the first half as Al Duhail condemned Sepahan to a 5-2 defeat at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

The Kenya international scored the opener in the 10th minute but Sepahan struck in the 20th minute through Nejad Mehdi to go level before Olunga again found the back of the net in the 35th minute to restore the hosts lead.

The Qatar Super League club failed to make it past the group stage last season, but this time round, they sailed through as Group D winners with 15 points having won five of the six games they played.

Olunga could not hold back his excitement having led the team to the fete and took on social media to celebrate his achievements as an individual and as a team.

ACL 2022 group stage done. Two goals and an assist. Proud of the team effort, it’s now time to recharge,” Olunga said.

Olunga missed their opening game which they lost 2-1 to Al-Taawoun on April 7, but he has managed o score four goals and record two assists in the five games he has played.

He won the Champions League top scorer last season after chalking up nine goals in six games he played in the tournament.

Olunga had recorded 15 shots on target in the Champions League campaign, scoring in every group game on his way to becoming the first Kenyan and Al Duhail player to bag the Asian golden boot.

The former Gor Mahia striker will be hoping that he can replicate his fine form in front of goal and win the golden boot for a second consecutive season.
