Wazito FC did not believe their eyes as the final whistle went at the Kasarani Annex on Monday afternoon, losing 2-0 to newbies FC Talanta in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League despite going into the break level at 0-0.
Wazito had started the game on the front foot but failed to capitalize on the first 20 minutes during which they dictated play as FC Talanta got into the game midway through the opening half.
Edwin Lavatsa and Dennis Oalo struck for FC Talanta in the second half for Ken Kenyatta’s side to hand their 10th win of the season and further dampen Wazito’s survival hopes.
Wazito head coach Fred Ambani has decried his side’s wastefulness in front of goal, noting that they get to pay for their lethargy in his attack after their opponents take their chances.
“Our main problem is failing to nail our chances. We create many goal-scoring opportunities but we are not clinical enough to make them count,” Ambani said.
But that is not Ambani’s only concern. Despite firing blanks in the final third, Wazito are too generous at the back and have let in 45 goals in 27 matches currently having a goal difference of -16.
According to the former he former Kenya international, miscommunication at the back has been one of their major undoing this season.
“It’s also important that we pay close attention to how we defend because at times we end up conceding easy goals,” he added.
With only seven games to the end of the season, Wazito are 16th on the FKF Premier League log with 21 points, seven points from safety.
They are next away to leaders Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Sunday.
