Mwamba Beat Impala to Win the Inaugural Women Kenya Cup

Mwamba are the winners of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Women’s Kenya Cup title after beating hosts Impala 15-11 in the final played at the Impala Club in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon.

For the 15-11 score, Mwamba scored three tries but failed to convert any while the hosts managed a single converted try and two penalties.

Kenya Lionesses star Janet Okello was the star of the show in the victory, bagging two tries for the champions, her fellow centre Terry Ayesa adding the other try as Impala got their lone try through flanker Hesla Khisa.

Mwamba head coach Joseph Baabu was over the moon following the title triumph heaping praise on his players for the good show.

“We executed our attacks and defence well even though we didn’t do well in territorial kicks. It was all about commitment and collective responsibility. There are a lot of opportunities if women’s rugby is taken seriously,” Baabu said.

His Impala counterpart Mary Ochieng also praised her players for a good fight despite emerging second best on their turf opining that their biggest undoing was the scrummages.

“The girls gave it a good fight despite falling short in the set-pieces. They contested the rucks and tries to run the ball but they fell short,” she said.

Impala topped the standings at the conclusion of the regular season before hitting Northern Suburbs 17-7 in the last four tie last month to book a slot in the final.

Mwamba who finished the regular season in second behind Impala on the six-team log made light work of Top Fry Nakuru in the semis by beating them 36-6 and setting up a mouth-watering clash with Impala.

Mercy Dudi, a teacher by profession, was the woman of the whistle assisted by Beril Akinyi and Noreen Liyosi.
