Daggers Drawn as Impala Host Mwamba in the First Ever Women Kenya Cup Final

The stage is set for the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Women’s Kenya Cup final pitting Impala and Mwamba at the Impala Club, Nairobi on Saturday afternoon.

It almost looks like a too close a tie to call but Impala who will be playing on their home turf have been vouched for as the better side to walk away with the gong.

Impala topped the standings at the conclusion of the regular season before hitting Northern Suburbs 17-7 in the last four tie last month to book a slot in the final.

Mwamba who finished the regular season in second behind Impala on the six-team log made light work of Top Fry Nakuru in the semis by beating them 36-6 and setting up a mouth-watering clash with Impala.

Impala head coach Mary Ochieng’ is confident of a triumph going into the tie, despite having two of her key players, Priscah Nyerere and Stella Wafula on the medical bed.

“We have been working very hard to get here since pre-season. It means a lot to the team. We are prepared and ready for the challenge in the final,” Ochieng’ said.

This  is the first KRU Women’s Kenya Cup final and having made it to the final at the first go, the two sides can all but marvel at their achievements.

Mwamba head coach Baabu Odindi is wary of the threat posed by Impala but banks on among others, Kenya Lionesses speedster Janet Okello.

“Impala is the team to beat. We are the underdogs. We expect a tough game. Impala has good players. They were busy in the transfer market and have invested a lot. They are dangerous and rarely make mistakes,” the tactician said in a pre-match briefing.

Referee Mercy Dudi, a teacher by profession, will be at centre of the match assisted by Beril Akinyi and Noreen Liyosi.
