It was dubbed the clash of titans, Thika Queens against Vihiga Queens at the Thika Stadium on Wednesday afternoon with social media awash with analysis of who would get the better of who.
Truth of the matter is all the hype that the game got was warranted for it was a duel starring current Kenya Women premier League (KWPL) champions against former Kenya Women premier League champions who are also the East African (CECAFA) champions.
Ahead of kick off, Vihiga Queens were unbeaten, leading the 12-team KWPL log with 28 points after ten games, having drawn only on and winning the rest.
In the ten games, the Boniface Nyamuhnyamuh-coached side scored 40 goals while conceding only seven while Thika Queens were in third with 20 points.
Of the ten games they had played, the defending champions had won six, drawn two and lost two, scoring 21 goals in the process and letting in eight goals.
At exactly 1pm, the whistle at the Thika Stadium, Thika Queens against Vihiga Queens both sides in pursuit of a win that would make a statement in this season’s KWPL title chase.
The game was closely contested, heading into the break tied at 0-0 as the two teams underlined their intentions of winning the title.
It was until late in the second half when the deadlock was broken, Janet Moraa firing into the Thika Queens net following an assist from Mercy Wayodi.
That was the only goal of the game as it ended 1-0 in favour of CECAFA champions Vihiga Queens with Thika Queens contemplating of revenge in the return leg at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Vihiga Queens now stretch their tally atop the log with 31 points after 11 matches.
