Stakeholders Decry Suspect Officiating in the Kenyan Game

Officiating in the Kenyan league has come under serious scrutiny and intense criticism following recent displays that have been termed by a vast majority as mediocre and comedic.

Over the weekend, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League witnessed some shocking officiating, Nairobi City Stars versus Bidco United being one of the games and Caroline Wanjala being one of the referees.

Fans and several stakeholders have come out to condemn the officiating in the top flight and the National Super League, some throwing about accusations of match fixing, at least as reported by a local publication.

One of the stakeholders is Posta Rangers Team Manager John Wakhu who has called by name the officials he thinks are a thorn in the flesh.

“Lucas Odhiambo, Moses Simiyu, Caroline Wanjala and Vincent Ashira are referees who are openly biased and are letting the FK-FPL and the game in general down. I can without fear say that they are working for Kakamega Homeboyz and therefore openly ensure other title contenders don’t win matches through their weird calls,” Wakhu is quoted by a local digital news outlet.

In the game that led to public outcry over the weekend, Wanjala awarded a dubious penalty to both Bidco United Nairobi City Stars, the former converting their as the latter missed.

The situation has been termed worse in the National Super League, with Gusii United head coach Andrew Ongwae among those that have raised concerns.

“The referees are honestly spoiling the game… The weirdest thing is that they are not favouring the home sides but making very weird calls in favour of both teams. I have seen very soft penalties given and this basically shows the matches are being fixed,” Ongwae told the outlet.
