KRU Makes Shock About-turn, Relegates Impala Saracens, Saves Harlequin

In a sudden turn of events the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has now changed the tune on who will be relegated from the Kenya Cup alongside record champions Nondescripts.

Nondies who have been relegated from the Kenya Cup for the first time since the Kenyan rugby top tier was incepted in 1970, were on Sunday confirmed to be going down together with Kenya Harlequin after the two clubs finished in the last two positions on the 12-team Kenya Cup log with 16 points and 17 points in that order.

The Quins though tied with Impala Saracens on 17 points, but the later edged them out on grounds of a better aggregate of -47 against Quins’ -69.

KRU has since changed tune and instead slapped Saracens with a relegation ticket, indicating that they had opted to break the tie between the two clubs using the head to head record.

The new tie breaker favours Quins as they beat Saracens in their regular season match, winning 29-20 on November 27, 2021.

“In making the determination, the guiding principle was the results of the fixture(s) between the two teams takes precedence over the results of the two teams against the rest of the league participants,” said Hilary Itela, KRU’s League and Fixtures Committee chairman.

According to Itela, the decision was arrived at in their meeting on Monday citing Clause 5.c of the Kenya Cup League manual.

“The principle remains that the results of the fixture between the two teams takes precedence,” he added.

The latest turn of events may see the battle head to the Sports Disputes Tribunal, with sources within Impala Saracens indicating that they will not be going down without a fight.
