Robert Matano Coy on Tusker’s Potential Title Defence After Closing Gap on Leading Cast

Defending champions Tusker are seated in the top three of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League for the first time this season following a 2-0 win over Sofapaka at the Kasarani Annex on Friday afternoon.

Ibrahim Joshua and Eric Zakayo struck in the second half to hand the Brewers their 10th win this season and give their resurgence a shot in the arm.

The win temporarily took Tusker to second place on 33 points from 19 matches, four points adrift of leaders Kakamega Homboyz who have played a game less.

Nairobi City Stars have however reclaimed second place and pushed Tusker to third on the standings with a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Mathare United at the Thika Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the revitalizing in his side after enduring a torrid start to the campaign, Tusker head coach Robert Matano has downplayed the talk of a possible title defence opting to entirely focus on winning their matches.

“We have played well and scored goals. The league continues and we are still not interested in speaking about the title chances. We played collectively, dominated the game and have bagged the maximum points,” Matano said in a post-match press conference.

His Sofapaka counterpart Ken Odhiambo blamed their wastefulness in front of goal, insisting they could have grabbed at least a point from the fixture had they taken their chances.

Meanwhile Sofapaka are 12th on the 18-team log with 24 points, having won six, drawn six and lost six of the 18 games they have played this season.

Patrick Matasi kept his seventh consecutive clean sheet in between the sticks for the Brewers who registered a fifth win in seven games to reaffirm their status in the leading cast.
