Suspended! FIFA Cracks Whip on Kenya, at Last!

The future of Kenyan football now lies in the cold after the East African national was suspended by FIFA from all international footballing activities.

The world’s football governing body which says the ban which comes into place immediately is as a result of meddling by the Kenyan government in the management of football.

“We had to suspend two of our member associations — Kenya and Zimbabwe. Both for government interference in the activities of the football associations of these associations,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino told a press conference on Thursday evening.

As opposed to the anticipated ban, Kenya was indefinitely suspended from the sport, implying that the national football teams led Harambee Stars and Harambee Starlets cannot participate in any international tournaments or matches, neither can they play any international friendly.

The sanctions also hit local clubs as they are ruled out of any continental tournaments notably the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Local football leagues are however unaffected by the suspension.

“We have our statues and we expect countries to abide by it. We want to work with the government but there’s always a line, it must be respected,” added Infantino.

According to FIFA, the sanctions will only be lifted if Kenya puts her house in order; this implying that the country has to do away with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee and reinstate FKF with its secretariat.

“They know what needs to be done for them to be readmitted or for their suspensions to be lifted,” said the FIFA president.

Kenya has for months now been on FIFA’s radar with experts and FIFA itself warning of a potential ban after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded FKF and formed a caretaker committee.

FIFA had directed Amina to reinstate FKF but she stayed put leaving FIFA with no option but to crack the whip.
