Tough Test for Owuor as Morans Depart for 2023 FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers

The Kenya men’s national basketball team Morans have left for the Senegalese capital of Dakar for round one of the 2023 FIBA World Cup African qualifiers.

The team failed to travel on Tuesday morning as earlier planned after the Ministry of Sports delayed to release funds for the trip but was resolved and the team jetted out of the country on Wednesday morning destined for the West African country.

Head coach Cliff Owuor named a provisional 20-man squad last month for the qualifiers but only 12 have been carried to Dakar along with five officials.

Of the 12 players, seven ply their trade locally including skippers Eric Mutoro from Ulinzi and Tunder’s Griffins Ligare.

Among the players that have been left behind is Denmark-based attacker Tylor Ongwae, Bush Wamukota who plies his trade in Rwanda and USA-based Orion Onyango.

Morans are pooled in Group D alongside Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Senegal in the 2023 FIBA World Cup African qualifiers.

Kenya lifts the lid off its qualifying campaign in Dakar against DRC on February 25, followed by Egypt a day later before wrapping up its first-round qualification matches against the hosts on February 27.

The return leg of the qualifiers is set for July at a venue yet to be announced after which the second round will receive the best four teams from the four groups.

Owuor faces a difficult task of leading Kenya to the 2021 FIBA World Cup after replacing Australian Liz Mills at the helm of Morans last month.

Mills led Kenya in the qualifiers as well as the main tournament that was held in Kigali, Rwanda in August and September 2021 but parted ways with the Kenya Basketball Federation in January in unclear circumstances, paving way for the return of the experienced Owuor.
