Kenya’s Ex-Premier Promises AFCON & World Cup Qualification if Elected President

Kenya’s Ex-Premier Promises AFCON & World Cup Qualification if Elected President

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has promised Kenyan football fans some delicacies when he ascends to the country’s top seat in the August polls.

If elected president in the August 9, 2022 polls, Odinga has promised to ensure the national men’s football team Harambee Stars participates in the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after missing out on the 33rd edition that concluded on Sunday, February 6, in Cameroon.

Taking to Twitter, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader also congratulated Senegal for winning their first-ever AFCON title by dispatching record champions Egypt 4-2 on post-match penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time.

“Congratulations Senegal on winning #AFCON2021 I promise the legion of Kenyan soccer fans that under my administration Harambee stars will be at the next #AFCON,” Raila Odinga posted on his Twitter account.

The 2022 presidential hopeful says his government will prioritize re-asserting Kenya as a football powerhouse and that will start by giving a shot in the arm to grass-root football. We’ll invest in football starting with grassroots/mtaani and community clubs. #Inawezekana,” he said.

A few days after the start of the AFCON finals in January, Odinga decried Kenya’s absence from the continental tournament even as underdogs pulled off surprises.

The 77-year-old went on to remind Kenyan football fans that even as the World Cup will be going down in Qatar at the end of the year, Kenya will still not be there.

“Small islands like Comoros and countries like Burkina Faso are in Cameroon playing at the Nations Cup yet Kenya is not there. When the World Cup is staged, Kenya is never there,” Raila said in a meeting with Maa community leaders last month.

He pledged that once he takes the presidency, Harambee Stars will participate in continental and global tournaments regularly.
