The game at Old Trafford ends 1-1, as Greenwood’s wonder-goal is cancelled out by Rieder! Manchester United go through to the Last 16, while the Swiss outfit are eliminated from European competition!

An experimental Manchester United team produced a disappointing performance, to draw 1-1 against Young Boys in their final UEFA Champions League Group F match, at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

With United certain of top spot in the group, new manager, Ralf Rangnick, made 11 changes from his first match in charge on Sunday, with Anthony Elanga and Amad Diallo making their UCL debuts.

The Swiss outfit knew victory would give them a chance of finishing third in the group and qualifying for the Europa League. However, it was United who started better and took the lead in incredible fashion on nine minutes, through Mason Greenwood, as he met Luke Shaw’s cross with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

However, United missed a hatful of chances to double their lead and were made to pay on 42 minutes, when Fabian Rieder intercepted Donny van de Beek’s poor pass to hit a fantastic strike past goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, from the edge of the box.

David Wagner’s Young Boys gained confidence with the goal and were almost ahead just seconds later, as United failed to re-find their rhythm after conceding.

The visitors continued to look the more likely to find the winner after half-time, with Quentin Maceiras shooting wide when he should have done better, while Elanga forced a good save from Young Boys goalkeeper, Guillaume Faivre.

Rangnick also gave debuts to goalkeeper Tom Heaton, and midfielders, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage in the second half.

The other match in this group, between Atalanta and Villarreal, was postponed due to heavy snow. However, that game is irrelevant to where United or Young Boys will finish in Group H.
